Pursuing A Career And Environmental Engineering - 2118 Words
Pursuing a Career in Environmental Engineering ââ¬Å"I wanted to pursue engineering to make some kind of positive (and hopefully) enduring mark on the world.â⬠(J. Kronberg, Electrical Engineer) For most of us, I would like to say this is also our goal in being engineers. The National Academy of Engineering says, ââ¬Å"Engineering has been defined in many ways. It is often referred to as the ââ¬Ëapplication of scienceââ¬â¢ because engineers take abstract ideas and build tangible products from them.â⬠(Stephan 2) However, engineering is a broad and hard-to-define field of study that helps us solve real life problems. It cannot be reduced to a single definition, but is covered under an umbrella of applying scientific knowledge to help make life better for everyone. Environmental engineering specifically is focused on ââ¬Å"cleaning up environmental contamination, as well as designing sustainable approaches to prevent future contamination.â⬠(16) Some tasks assigned to environmental engineers are providing s afe drinking water, disposing municipal solid wastes, treatment of air pollutants, and designing a sustainable future. Pursuing a career in environmental engineering means you will be working to build a future our grandchildren, and their grandchildren can rely on. Analysis Of William Blake s The Lamb - 994 Words
William Blake is inspired to write this poem in which the central purpose or theme is to identify who the Lamb is and its origins, by formulating a series of questions, and to describe its characteristics and personality by portraying its awesome attributes. The World English Dictionary defines Lamb as: ââ¬Å"1. A young, immature sheep, especially under a year old and without permanent teeth; 2. Somebody who is meek, gentle, and mild, especially a baby or a small child; 3. Someone who is easily deceived or cheated; 4. Like a Lamb to the slaughter calmly and without resistance going to face something unpleasant or dangerous.â⬠It is clearly noted by the authorââ¬â¢s figurative language that the poem is symbolic and allegoricââ¬âhaving the Lambââ¬â¢s description a second meaning beneath the surface one, conveying connotations beyond what is expressed, and an ulterior meaning as major interest. ââ¬Å"Little Lamb who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee?â⬠The po em appears to be written in a form of Sonnet in a Petrarchan style with two stanzas. The first of eight lines or octave has a rhyme-scheem aabb aabb; the second of six lines or sestet has a rhyme-scheem abccba. By formulating the questions of the first stanza, Blake seams to convey the perplexity or greatness of the Lamb rather than ignoring or expressing lack of knowledge regarding the origin, creation, clothing and protection of the Lambââ¬âââ¬Å"Gave thee life, and bid thee feedâ⬠¦Gave thee clothing of delight.â⬠In the second stanza the authorShow MoreRelatedThe Tyger By William Blake Essay969 Words à |à 4 PagesAmerican poet, William Blake. Cultural Management
Question: Describe about the cultural management. Answer: Culturally diverse management is a facet of supervising job groups in ways that deliberates differences in societies, norms and inclinations of customers universally businesswise. Organizations need to find out how to effect or manipulate their methods while maintaining their ultimate goal (Jallat and Kimmel, 2002). For example cultures maybe categorized according to national cultures examples being American or Canadian, differences in religion examples being Christian and Islamic cultures and also cultures brought about by gender and sexuality all these cultures contribute to the difference in styles of persuasion and negotiation behaviors. Diverse arrangement is said to happen where the gatherings are from various cultures; furthermore, in this manner have distinctive social convictions and attitudes. When strolling into the transaction corridor, a gathering is confronted with the accompanying inquiries; in what manner would I be able to begin a decent arrangement with individuals I don't have the foggiest idea? What do these individuals like or abhorrence? At the point when do I have to utilize an operator as opposed to myself? To viably answer these inquiries, one must comprehend that the other side are individuals and are individuals from some type of society. These societies influence the way the way they impart, think and carry on. It influences the sort of exchanges they go into and the way they arrange such transactions. It is therefore vital to comprehend the way of life of the arranging parties or else obstructions might be made which will block or even prompt disappointment of the entire arranging process (Mi n, 1999). Diverse arrangements display even the most experienced entrepreneurs with heavy difficulties as a result of the social subtleties organizations must explore. Diverse societies incline toward various correspondence and transaction styles. Picking colleagues who can work as per social inclinations can give you a solid point of preference over the opposition. It's difficult to turn a forceful, in-your-face mediator into an unassuming self observer. You'll have to pick colleagues whose common correspondence styles function admirably inside the nearby culture, in this manner picking up the trust of your arranging accomplices. For instance, some Eastern societies loathe open, direct clash, so transactions ought to take a more circuitous, agreeable and aware course (Anon, 1977). While numerous people feel as though fruitful arrangements are basically the result of characteristic expertise, the motive towards achieving ideal understanding lies in planning. Planning incorporates knowledge of your necessities knowing your needs and breaking points, incorporating the other group objectives and expecting the groups cutoff points, propping for the right answers, and adopting imagination to your arrangements. Great arrangement allows for sharp thinking, reaction and anticipation while transacting. A standout amongst popular arrangement planning includes utilizing interests, choices, authenticity, choices, correspondence, relationship, and duty. By considering these diverse components of an effective transaction, you can enter the arranging room completely arranged and completely educated (Depledge, 2005). Each time you arrange, you need to settle on decisions that effect whether you achieve a compelling result for your business. To get the best results, you need to fathom the steps required in the game plan system. While various exchanges are clear, some will be among the hardest challenges you go up against. Your thriving will depend on after masterminding and arranging. Persistent approach courses of action with a sensible game plan of frameworks, messages and procedures that can oversee you from needing to close. No measure of preparation is a great deal in moving closer personality boggling or high-stakes plans. Game plan your approach to manage the subject under exchange, and your tone and correspondence style. In moving nearer the subject of your game plans: set your objectives clearly in your own specific identity (tallying your base agreeable result, your normal result and your ideal result), figure out what you'll do if the exchange, or a particular result, falls level, choos e your necessities, the prerequisites of the other party and the clarifications for them, rundown, rank and regard your issues (and after that consider concessions you may make),analyze the other party (numbering their objectives and the information they need),research the business segment and insight with partners and associates, rehearse the course of action, form an arrangement - discourse focuses, individuals, range and timetable (Henderson, 2003). In picking your correspondence style, adjust yourself with productive masterminding systems. Arm yourself with tranquil, beyond any doubt tone and a course of action of considered responses and frameworks to the systems you anticipate. While drawing in with the other party amid arrangement: Introduce yourself and expressive the motivation, Demonstrate quiet certainty, Propose - make your first offer. The other party will likewise make recommendations. You ought to infrequently acknowledge their first offer. Proof recommends that individuals who take the primary proposition are less fulfilled and lament their scramble, Check your comprehension of the other party's proposition, Remember your targets, Discuss ideas and thoughts, Consider concessions, then make and look for concessions, Suggest elective recommendations and listen to offered proposals, Paraphrase others' proposals to illuminate and recognize recommendations, Give and take (Cellich and Jain, 2012). Pause for a minute to return to your destinations for the arrangement. When you feel you are drawing closer a result that is worthy to you: search for shutting signals; for instance: blurring counter-contentions, tired non-verbal communication from the other party, arranging positions focalizing. Articulate assertions and concessions effectively made put forth "shutting" expressions; for instance 'That recommendation may work. Right. Where do I sign? get assertions in composing when you can catch up expeditiously on expressions; for instance on any responsibilities you have made (Maytin and Epstein, 2015). It is critical to note that while arranging clashes emerge and that might be best comprehended by utilizing these five procedures to be specific suit trade off, keep away from, team up and contend. People who oblige are unassertive and particularly accommodating. They dismiss their own specific stresses to satisfy the stresses of others. They frequently give in the midst of a conflict and remember they submitted a blunder or pick it is no real experience. Individuals who approach strife forcefully insist themselves and don't work together as they look for after their own specific stresses at other people's expense. To battle, people take a power presentation and use whatever power has all the earmarks of being legitimate to win. Individuals who avoid battle are generally unassertive and uncooperative. They don't quickly look for after their own specific concerns or those of the other individual, yet rather they avoid the conflict totally or delay their response. Differences are disre garded and they recognize contradiction. Dissimilar to avoiders, partners are both unequivocal and supportive. They assert their own specific viewpoints while furthermore listening to alternate points of view and welcome differences. They attempt to work with others to find plans that totally satisfy the stresses of both sides. Compromisers are respectably sure and bearably accommodating. They endeavor to find snappy, normally tasteful responses for conflicts that to some degree satisfy both sides (Contractor, 2001). References Anon, (1977). Article review The buzz on buzz.
The article overview The present article deals with such important phenomenon as buzz about products. The author focuses on the myths concerning this phenomenon. Dye (2000) also reveals the most effective strategies to create buzz.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Article review: The buzz on buzz. specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Dye (2000) notes that many marketers think that buzz is an ââ¬Å"explosive self-generating demandâ⬠phenomenon (as cited in Dye, 2000, p. 140). However, the author argues that buzz can be predicted and it can be also created as it also follows certain rules and principles. Dye (2000) provides certain myths existing in the world of business. Thus, the first myth is concerned with the type of products which can evoke buzz. Thus, the researcher states that not only outrageous products can be ââ¬Å"buzz-worthyâ⬠(Dye, 2000, p. 140). The second myth is that buzz cannot be created a s it just happens. The author depicts several strategies to create buzz. Dye (2000) claims that it is important to give the product to vanguard (those who can shape other peopleââ¬â¢s preferences), to create ration supply as people tend to have products that are unavailable for others, to use icons (celebrities) to create buzz, to understand the influence of lists and to focus on creating grass roots (i.e. addressing community). The third myth is concerned with the audience to address to create buzz. Some think that the target audience will create much buzz. However, Dye (2000) provides examples that verify that it is possible to achieve success addressing quite unexpected groups of people who will create much buzz. The fourth myth the author debunks is connected with the period of time to act. Thus, Dye (2000) states that companies should not necessarily react when buzz is at its highest. Finally, the fifth myth is concerned with the use of media. Thus, the author claims that th e use of media can lead to negative outcomes, as people can feel that they are pushed to make this or that decision. Finally, Dye (2000) reflects upon the future of buzz. The researcher claims that the Internet (forums, websites) will play an important (or even crucial) role in creating buzz.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Key points One of the most important findings of the author is the idea that buzz can be generated. Importantly, the author highlights the products which can evoke buzz. Actually, almost all types of products can evoke buzz. Notably, products associated with entertainment, recreation and health can be largely or partially driven by this phenomenon. However, there are products which are immune to it: oil, gas, utilities. The author also portrays features of products which are likely to evoke buzz. These are uniqueness (be it functionality, price, look, etc .) and visibility (people should see the products used by others). Of course, this information can affect marketing strategy of any company. More so, it can affect market. Thus, companies can understand to what extent to rely on word of mouth while marketing this or that product or service. Apart from this, the author reveals myths concerning buzz. Basically, these myths can be regarded as typical mistakes made by marketers. For instance, one of the greatest misconceptions is that excessive advertising can lead to word of mouth. Thus, the author notes that such advertising can make people feel that they are being persuaded and they are being manipulated. Of course, this will lead to opposite effects. This finding does shape marketing strategy as companies which want to make use of word of mouth will try to use media (TV, radio, print advertisement is also included) moderately. Those who make a decision to create buzz should forget about conventional strategies or at least rethink th e strategies they are going to use. Admittedly, the authorââ¬â¢s remark concerning the use of the Internet is one of the central findings. Nowadays marketers have already acknowledged the great power of the Internet. Dye (2000) suggests that the use of forums and creation of certain websites is beneficial for developing buzz.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Article review: The buzz on buzz. specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It is possible to add that social networks contribute greatly to the development of buzz. Marketers can focus on these means to create buzz about their products. Follow-on research It is possible to state that the article under consideration was written when people only started understanding the power of the Internet. The word of mouth was regarded as some phenomenon which could hardly be understood and analyzed. The article in question was one of the first to show that this phenomenon can be studied and used when marketing products. Now many researchers provide various strategies to market products with the help of word of mouth. For instance, Duan et al. (2008) focus on such online means as online reviews. The researchers report that online ratings do not affect filmsââ¬â¢ box office revenues. Nonetheless, the authors add that the number of online reviews drastically affects filmsââ¬â¢ box office revenues. Thus, Duan et al. (2008) focus on one of the manifestations of word of mouth. Companies can use this information to develop buzz about their products as the number of discussions does affect popularity of the product. Likewise, Berger and Schwartz (2011) claim that word of mouth affects sales. The researchers focus on psychological aspect of the issue. They try to understand what can evoke word of mouth. They try to understand what makes people talk about products and eventually buy products. The researchers also emphasize the role of the Internet (especiall y social networking) in their article. Admittedly, these data can help companies develop successful strategies to develop new products and to market them. Applications It is important to note that the present article provides valuable insights that can shape the process of product development. Thus, Dye (2000) portrays the features of the products that evoke word of mouth. Therefore, while developing new products companies should pay attention to these features. For instance, it is essential to make the product unique. Companies should understand that the product should have at least one unique characteristic feature (look or efficiency, etc.). It is also important to make sure that the product (and its uniqueness) is visible. Thus, the company should make sure that the product can be recognizable. This will make people interested in the product.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! It is also important to understand that word of mouth does affect sales, so it is also necessary to debunk all myths concerning this phenomenon to work out the most effective marketing strategy. Finally, it is also important to think of the most appropriate marketing strategy when developing product as these two processes are interconnected. The present article provides information that verifies this statement as it contains examples when word of mouth created demand in products that were only in the stage of development. Free Essays on Happiness
The Biggest Lie in Todayââ¬â¢s Society One of the biggest lies in society is the definition of achieving true happiness. What is happiness? According to Michael Argyle, the author of ââ¬Å"The Psychology of Happinessâ⬠, people may describe happiness in terms of contentment, satisfaction, peace of mind, feeling fulfilled, or in terms of enjoyment, pleasure and having funâ⬠(Argyle 2). According to the Webster Dictionary, happiness can be defined as feelings of joy and pleasure mingled together. To me happiness is more than just an experience of joy or pleasure. It is a state of mind where the individual feels that ââ¬Å"life is goodâ⬠. Despite how popular happiness really is, psychology has more often focused on negative emotions. From 1967 to 1994, ââ¬Å"Psychological Abstractsâ⬠(a readers guide to psychological literature) included 5099 articles mentioning anger, 36.851 mentioning anxiety, 46.380 mentioning depression. For every 17 abstracts on these topics, only one mentioned satisfaction (2340), or happiness (2389). There is a tendency for most people to explain happiness or unhappiness in terms of the external events of their lives. They explain happiness by pointing to the positives; they explain unhappiness by pointing to the negatives. The implication is that events determine whether or not they are happy. I have always thought that our attitudes have far more to do with how happy we are than any external circumstances. Today, research supports such views. For instance, Sergeant Wilson (an active duty army soldier) served in Iraq and Afghanistan for about one year and a half dealing with numerous horrific experiences. Before he left, like many soldiers, he had a positive yet proactive state of mind. He told himself that regardless of where life and its circumstances took him, he would not allow it to diminish his spirit. Team Building Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Team Building - Essay Example Conflict resolution process is essential to resolve conflicts that arise between individuals and/or groups. Conflicts can arise at many levels such as interpersonal levels, role level, between multiple parties, and at external levels (Fisher, 1977, Rev 1985 2000). At workplace, most common conflicts occur at interpersonal levels, which arise between individuals because of different needs, goals, and beliefs. The most common factor that is involved in interpersonal conflicts is the relationship between two individuals. It is very difficult for a third person, like a manager, to analyze interpersonal relationship between two individuals because relationships are shaped by a variety of incidents in the past. Hence, it becomes extremely challenging to resolve interpersonal conflicts that arise because of relationship history (Collins & Oââ¬â¢Rourke, 2008a). Nevertheless, such conflicts can severely affect their performance and behavior. Hence, it becomes important for managers to addr ess conflicts at these levels in order to ensure smooth flow of work and maintain healthy environment in the team. Very often, interpersonal conflicts are trigged by lack of communication or misinterpretation of communication. Interpersonal conflicts can be addressed by fostering effective communication among team members. For this, the team members must first be made to realize the significance of communication in workplace. This can be achieved by conducting this simple teambuilding exercise named ââ¬ËDo you know what I mean?ââ¬â¢ (Kumar, n.d). This teambuilding exercise involves participation from the entire team. Firstly, one volunteer from the team should be advised to draw different shapes/pictures of at least 10 different things that come to his/her mind on a chart. Next, the volunteer must instruct the team members verbally to draw these exact shapes without actually showing the chart. The team members may be allowed to ask questions. The result of this exercise will b e that none of the groupââ¬â¢s pictures will match the original picture exactly (in shape and/or size), and some may be completely different. This exercise will make the team members realize the importance of communication in understanding the other personââ¬â¢s viewpoint in order to produce the desired outcome. Communication breakdown is considered as an important cause for interpersonal conflict. Therefore one has to possess or acquire effective communication skills to handle conflicts. Communication skills that are essential in conflict resolution include listening, asking appropriate questions, clarity of words and speech, and translating the conversation in the right manner that is acceptable to both the parties involved in the conflict. In this teambuilding exercise, the team members need to ask open ended questions so that they get a better idea of the picture that needs to be drawn. Open-ended questions help in acquiring more information from the other person; and begi n with words such as ââ¬Ëhowââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëwhat.ââ¬â¢ However, during conflicts, people tend to ask closed-ended questions that elicit only a ââ¬Ëyesââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ënoââ¬â¢ answers (Collins & Oââ¬â¢Rourke, 2008b). Open-ended questions provide more information and learning to the listeners. Another important aspect of communication, especially important in conflict resolution, is to listen to the other person. In the present exercise,
